-How are the Chinese soldiers portrayed in these prints? The Japanese soldiers?
Chinese soldiers were thought of as weak and vulnerable. They are mostly seen losing the majority of the battles. On the otherhand, the Japanese soldiers are portrayed as dominant soldiers who are seen not only winning the battle, but are also helping the children of the enemy, which shows generosity. Their advanced armor and courage also shows supremacy.

Look at the weapons used by each side, are they different?How? Does this tell us anything about Japanese technological advancement?
-The Japanese soldiers are drawn with weapons that seem advanced. Their armor and weapons seem to be more westernized, which helps them appear stronger within the paintings.

-Why do sports often become symbolic battlegrounds between nations?
Without any wars, sports promoted the nationalistic characteristics of countries. Sports had different countries compete against each other, which increased the growth in patriotism and nationalism. .
Why does this matter to a people? What do they find so gratifying in the experience of witnessing their team beat another on the arena of sport?//

-Is imperialism/colonialism simply about militarily and politically controlling another nation, or is it also about proving one’s self-perceived cultural superiority over another?
Without another nation to rely on for ideas and goods, a country will never prosper, unless they invent something for their own. However, if they do have neighbors to compete or interact with, they are sure to advance at a faster rate.

Artistic renditions and photographs do depict the heroics of war better, as it shows people a clear image of the scenery instead of texts, which would only require the readers to portray a conjectured image within their heads. In renditions, or reproductions of certain events, performers or editors are provided with the technology to alter the actual occurrences of the events to make the soldiers or battles seem more gallant then they actually are.
Do artistic renditions or photographs depict the horrors of war better?
In some cases, photographs and works of art do portray the true affairs of war, whereas some only choose to capture the images that aren’t as intimidating as actual combat. However, there will always be works of art that will illustrate the horrors of war.
How does the medium affect the message? Can we say that, "[T]he medium is the message"?
In a message, there is always a medium, which affects the way a reader analyzes the message. Due to the medium, there can be many ways where different people understand the message in different intentions. In a way, we could say that the medium is the message, in that it ultimately shapes the value of the message.
Why is 1905 such a turning point in Japanese and World history? How might history have been different had Japan lost the Russo-Japanese War?
In 1905, the Japanese defeated the Russians at war, and this was a turning point in the history of war. It was the first time when a European power was defeated by an Asian country at war. Not only did this promote the Japanese as the super-country of Asia, but it also proved that white men, who have been dominant for a majority of recorded history, could be defeated by different ethnicities. If Japan had lost the war against the Russians, then the belief that the supreme leaders of today’s world are Western and European powers would still be present.



To what degree did Koreans today achieve the objectives of the Gabo Reform? (Debate)

- Korea was able to achieve independence in March 1, 1919
- Korea is now a democratic society (not sovereign)
- All are allowed to study (not only those who are "talented.")
- As a male citizen of Korea, you must join the army.
- No biased prejudice gov. ....only the rich are elected (X), polls and votes shape the government.
- People who run gov. today have an academic background to support them.
- Lots of people are pushed to the arts (Artists are recognized)
- Certain equality level.

AGAINST
- Rich people run for gov. official..
- Korea is a democratic nation - relations with ppl (high status)...then u have advantages to elevate you to certain statuses.
- People who have no money to attend hagwon or school are excluded.
- People who pursue arts (still some prejudice / individuals)
- Not everybody has to join the army after an certain age...certain physical condition...powerful background (goes against "regardless of background")

-presence of foreigners influences government decisions.
